Bill Dvorak is the current editor of the Domestic DX Digest-West (DDXD-W) column in DX News. Bill and his wife Nina live in Madison, Wisconsin. A near lifelong resident of Madison, he has degrees from two local institutions of higher learning, the University of Wisconsin-Madison (BA) and Edgewood College (MBA). Bill is retired, after a long career as a Quality Control specialist in a food processing operation.
Bill's interest in DXing began one October night in 1956 when, along with his brother, he was listening to the bedside radio. When the station that they were listening to IDed itself as KOA Denver, Bill was amazed. To his further amazement, they were soon IDing stations from many other distant places. A lifelong hobby had begun.
Bill spends more time on AM than any other band, but he also enjoys shortwave and FM. Besides the NRC, he belongs to the North American Shortwave Association (NASWA) and the Worldwide TV-FM DX Association (WTFDA).
Bill is co-founder and alternate-year host of the Madison-Milwaukee Get-together for DXers and Radio Enthusiasts, a one-day all-band event that takes place every third Saturday in August. He also attends at least a couple of DX gatherings a year. Other radio interests include collecting station promo materials, especially bumper stickers and refrigerator magnets, and visiting stations. For AM DX Bill uses a Drake R8B communications receiver and a Quantum QX Pro loop antenna, both presents to himself when he retired. Favorite DX activities include chasing FM E-skip in the summer, listening to stations carrying Friday night football, and trying for AM DX tests.
Besides radio, Bill enjoys following Wisconsin sports (Badgers, Packers, Brewers), traveling the Upper Midwest, visiting Great Lakes lighthouses, and spending time with his wife Nina.
