John got his start in broadcasting by making a pest of himself around the studios of WCAX-620 in Burlington, VT during one summer in high school. The staff finally took pity and let him fill in for a vacationing dj.
In 1949 he got permission to build and license WRMC, the college radio station in Middlebury, VT, and served as Chief Engineer until graduating in 1952. His post-graduate work netted him a research staff position with RCA Laboratories and, later, responsibility for licensing of all RCA and NBC radio, tv, and satellite transmitters.
His weekends were spent on WHWH in Princeton, NJ where he was weekend morning man for several years, then to WIMG, WWFM and finally to WBUD with a Saturday night big-band program for the Trenton market. He built WWPH, the high-school station in Princeton Junction, NJ, and managed it for 17 years before retiring and moving to Florida where he now resides.
John and his wife travelled 96,000 miles in a motorhome after retiring. The rig was outfitted with 7 AM radios, each with a cassette tape recorder. The travel routine called for stopping a few minutes each hour to make clean recordings of nearby stations. The over 4,000 IDs they recorded between 1988 and 1998 now form the base for his Travellog program on the DX Audio Service.
In addition to the Travellog, John is a member of the NRC Board of Directors and acts as the Board's Ombudsman. You can contact John by mail to his Florida address of P.O. Box 5192, Sun City Center FL 33573-5192.
